Hand-made Bedlinen Ideas
Like windows, floors and walls, the bed is another large, flat expanse and therefore an excellent area on which to display your hand-painted or printed textiles. Duvet covers, valances, sheets, pillow cases, bolsters and eider downs may all be decorated using any of the techniques you can apply to textile surface design – hand-painting, hand silkscreen-printing, batik, block-printing, stenciling etc.
The main criteria for selecting fabric for bedlinen is to choose a soft and comfortable material, with some ability to resist creasing for ease of laundering.
As an alternative to make your own bedlinen, you could decorate ready-made items. However, if you decide to do this, make sure that you place a piece of cardboard or thick paper between two layers of a duvet cover or pillowcase to prevent the paint from seeping through to the other layer.
Cushions are an ideal project for beginners since they are small in scale, easy to handle and inexpensive to produce.
