Without fabric there would be no fashion. Whether woven, knitted, printed, embroidered or bejewelled, textiles are crucial to the eloquence of apparel and fundamental to the fashion design process. We are presenting very few textile designers who work mostly in the fashion industry. Their designs can be seen on the catwalks of all major worldwide fashion shows and fashion showrooms.
Fabric paints are available in two basic sorts – those that are absorbed into the fabric and those that rest on the surface of the cloth. While both varieties are suitable for painting light-coloured backgrounds, if you intended to work on a dark ground you will need to select the sort that rests on the surface of the cloth. This is the most important in order to preserve a clear outline and to prevent the background colour from showing through. The main drawback of working with opaque fabric paints is that they do tend to stiffen the fabric, which affects the drape of the cloth. So, although they are acceptable for furnishing fabrics, blinds and cushion covers, they don’t work as well on garments.
The colours can be scientifically described, however, this description can’t fully communicate the sensation or emotional effect of a colour. So often we name the colour based on our familiar and shared knowledge of the world – after animals (elephant grey or canary yellow); flowers and vegetables (lilac, mushroom, tomato red), sweets and spices (saffron yellow, toffee); minerals and jewels (pearl, coral, jade) and so on.

Anna Torma was born in 1952, Tarnaors, Hungary. Her interest in working with textiles goes back to early childhood when she learned to sew, knit, crochet and embroider from her mother and grandmothers. Not an unusual start for the future textile artist. But, Anna is treating the textile as the tool for creating a complex surface designs deeply meaningful and inspirative.
The bleach technique is used on designs with a dye background, and is an alternative to painting the background around the motifs (called blotching). The bleach removes areas of colour from a dye ground, making it possible to apply a new colour to these areas, or to leave them white. This technique is particularly effective when light or bright colours will be used on darker grounds.

Jill Flower graduated from East Berkshire College in 2007 with a Diploma of Higher Education in Stitched Textiles (Distinction) and has also been nominated as a Licentiate of the Society of Designer Craftsmen. Jill have an avid interest in stitched textiles which now spans over 20 years.
Textile designer, Aleksandra Gaca studied the visual arts at high school in her hometown of Lodz in Poland. She subsequently studied in the department of Textiles and Fashion at the Haagse Koninklijke Academie voor Beeldende Kunsten (the Royal Institute for Fine Arts in The Hague). She has won many international prizes for her experimental work in textile design. Aleksandra Gaca lives and works as an independent textile designer in Delft, The Netherlands.
