Calligraphy project – Italic
Calligraphy comes from the Greek Kallos Graphe, meaning beautiful handwriting. For centuries calligraphy was cherished and used for the most important writing documents and as decoration. In this text we will takl about the Italic, which everybody heard of. But can you do it by hand, not the keyboard? Here is the short introduction on how to start with Italic calligraphy.
Create the Unique Envelopes
Do you like to send and receive letters? Real, paper and handwritten letters and cards? I think it is still sometimes the best way to communicate with people, because it shows that you really care. If you are a creative person and like to put your own mark on the things, making the unique, artistic envelopes can be a great fun. And the statement, too.
Decoupage technique
Découpage is the craft of decorating an object with paper cutouts glued in place. If you take the time to apply many coats of varnish over the paper cutouts, they will appear to sink into the surface and will look as though they are part of the object and not merely stuck on.
Box-making Technique
Box-making is also known by the French term “cartonnage” and covers variety of techniques. In its simplest form, this craft consists of cutting a form from flat card using a template, cutting out the shape, scoring and folding, then assembling it into a box. Gift boxes are readily available from stationer and craft shops but it’s much more fun – and cheaper – to make your own.
Button and silhouette cards
There are some simple silhouettes that you can make from vintage materials to make great handmade cards. Strong shapes that are easily recognisable seem to work best. Use a blank plain card or carefully cut and fold your own. Buy envelopes or make them. Decide on a style of image you want on the card: hearts, butterflies, crosses, wedding bells or even straightforward squares of interestingly patterned wallpaper, maps of fabric look really effective, and numbers and initials make your card personal too.
Shifu Weaver Hiroko Karuno
During Japan’s Edo period (1603 – 1868), in what is now the country’s northern Miyagi Prefecture, hand-made paper was woven into a cloth so supple, lightweight and refined that one of the area’s most powerful clans paid tribute to the shogun by presenting him with garments made from this luxurious paper cloth known as shifu. Woven from a paper weft against a silk warp, the production of shifu was tightly controlled and its process a well-guarded secret.
Paper Weaving
Weaving with papers is a truly versatile craft, not least because a variety of papers can be effectively woven, and the pattern permutations are vast. Interweaving paper allows you to create some striking designs, yet it is one of the simplest art forms.
Create Unique Passport or Notebook Covers
In this project you will learn how to protect and personalise a passport or notebook with a removable and reusable cover. With a few minor adjustments, you could adapt this cover for your passport, diary or notebook of any size and personalise it as much as you wish. In this version we have made the cover to fit a standard paperback novel and reused a skinny belt to create a book fastener and to join the front cover to the back.
Origami
Origami is the best known of all papercrafts, perhaps because it is the easiest to define and because most of us have done a little of it as children. Its strict rules permit no cutting, no gluing and no decoration of the paper: the sheet may only be folded. However, rules are there to be broken, ans many non-origami paper artists also use basic folding techniques in their work.
