Poppy Treffry are a small design and craft company based just outside Newlyn, a busy, messy, industrious fishing village in the far west of Cornwall. Art and fishing have mingled for centuries there and they are following in the tradition, stepping over sharks to get into the studio and using fish boxes to store thread.
Poppy with her design started small, back in 2004, selling to one or two galleries locally but eight years on the team has grown from just Poppy and one cranky singer sewing machine to eight people and 13 cranky singer sewing machines! The design products are all still made in Cornwall and inspired by the beautiful surroundings and they plan to keep it that way.
Poppy trained in textiles but was self-taught when it came to freehand embroidery, ‘vintage Singer style’. Her first attempts were, as she says, “pretty shabby” however she still has a couple of early attempts in a box, somewhere …
In 2010 they opened our first Poppy Treffry shop in St Ives, Cornwall. You can visit them if you are in the area (The Drill Hall, Chapel Street, St Ives, TR26 2LR). We are sure you will find a design piece you will in love with.
In the shop you can find haberdashery (sewing kits, ribbons, books…), leather products, bags, cushions, cosies, ceramics, greeting cards, tags, different stationery products…). Poppy now also runs very popular stitching courses and her second book is out in September 2012.
Poppy has also licensed her popular design and they now appear on a range of greetings cards and a lovely leather collection. Every piece she create is unique and individual. She search high and low to discover the most beautiful fabrics.
